Frequently Asked Questions:
What kind of trading algorithms do you make?
We make all sorts of trading algorithms, it depends on what you need or want. Some people use algorithms to analyze data automatically and present them with market opportunities in real-time. Others simply want to retroactively analyze a market. You can group the type of algorithms we write into three categories: calculators, strategies, and systems. A calculator does a simple action, for example: calculating your optimal position size based on your portfolio and risk aversion. A strategy will try to spot market opportunities for you to trade using a number of factors and conditions. Finally, a system brings everything together, and is a combination of many calculators and strategies, and is capable of identifying and executing trades on your behalf. We also create algorithms for studies and experiments, backtests, and screening.
What markets do you cover?
We’ve worked with a large number of asset classes, and all markets, from stocks, to commodities, and cryptocurrency. The only limitation is in what data you have access to or are willing to pay for. If you want to use live tick data as part of your strategy decision making process then you will need to have access to that data. The same applies for illiquid assets and EM OTC securities. If you have a specific market question, send us a message.
Can you build a strategy for me without my input?
We are not in the business of generating and selling ideas, and consider that irresponsible. Everyone’s financial situation is different, and there is no “one-size-fits-all” strategy. We are here to make sure that your idea is realized in the best way possible.
Can you help improve my idea?
We can offer guidance, however you have to ask for it first. We don’t want to dissuade you from your ideas or interrupt your creative thinking process. Many repeat customers approach us every month with implementations that they would like to test, are specific, and know exactly what they’re looking for. If we do spot fatal reasoning or logic in your idea we will ask you whether you want input.
I want you to build an HFT strategy.
When it comes to high-frequency trading, we can build relative arbitrage strategies, and closed-end (dark pool / B-Book) strategies. The frequency at which they are executed depends highly on the data that you have access with.
Do you guarantee results for your algorithms?
We do not, and never will, guarantee any financial gain or losses resulting from the use of our software. 99% of our clients employ us for creating semi-automatic algorithms, which by design are dependent on supervision and agent execution. If we build an algorithm that produces a trade signal, but you fail to act upon it you have only yourself to blame. We make it very clear that the biggest limitation of any trading system is when the agent deviates from it.
Do you make trading bots?
In short – yes. However, we always get a little bit nervous when someone asks for a “bot”, because people have different understandings of what that word means. We believe that it is best to have a system when you’re trading, a system is your strategy. We can automate your strategy to the point that it trades automatically (without your explicit confirmation) or semi-automatically (with your supervision). Just remember, a “bot” is only as good as it’s strategy.
Why should I use systematic trading? I do just fine without it.
Whether or not you believe in the supremacy of quantitative finance or not, I am sure we can all agree that it’s better to have a plan when it comes to investing and trading. Systematic trading merely supports existing processes and strategies that you conduct both explicitly and intuitively. If you’re a value investor this may mean automating your valuation processes, screening, or risk management. We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, but you could say we’re trying to keep air in the tires.
Do you use AI or Machine Learning, and should I use them as part of my strategies?
We have a policy for AI and Machine Learning – centered algorithms. We avoid them. They’re incredibly taxing on our resource, take a long time build correctly, and most of the time the person insisting on their use doesn’t really understand how they work. There are great applications for AI and ML in finance, but they are not for the average individual, and definitely not fit for a trader that doesn’t understand them. It’s not in our ethos to build you an algorithm, or realize and idea that you don’t understand. If you insist, and prepared to bear the resource costs, we would consider it.
I'm not very tech savvy, what should I expect?
As part of our client onboarding process we will ask you a couple of questions to gauge your familiarity with the technology. Most of the programs we write are in Python, which works on any device. If you don’t want to touch any code yourself we can bundle your software with a GUI (Graphic User Interface). Training is also an important part of our delivery process.
What's stopping you from acting on my ideas or IP?
Your trading strategy is your trading strategy, and it is not published or made available anywhere online. Our business is realizing your idea, and we don’t trade using our client’s strategies. We store local backups of the commits to the source-code for the duration of the warranty period, but you own the code at the end of our business relationship. We use non-disclosure agreements to protect your interests, you can find all of this outlined in the agreement between yourself and your relationship manager.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Paypal, Wiretransfer, and major cryptocurrencies.
How much should I expect to pay?
We’ve undertaken projects that spanned several months that incurred six-digit costs, but also take projects that can be done within an hour. Contact our sales team to get a rough estimate, and once you’ve talked to one of our developers you’ll be supplied with an itemized breakdown and quote.
